Snake Charmer

Several times in my travels in Sierra Leone I came across this somewhat eccentric man who carried many different kinds of poisonous snakes with him. In this picture are two snakes - a Gaboon viper and a Green Mamba - both found in Sierra Leone. He also had with him a Spitting Black Cobra. I think I first saw him in Koindu at the international market there. I was certainly less willing to get close to the snakes then the Peace Corps volunteer in the lower photo. I guess he was just lucky because about two weeks after this picture was taken we received word that the snake charmer had been bitten by one of his snakes and died. Collecting snakes was only almost never done in Sierra Leone. Most people were wisely wary of any snake.
