The Bondo visits Tokpombu Nongowa

The village of Tokpombu was about one mile from our house, south of us on Dama Road. A somewhat nondescript village - many a picture of the Bondo was taken by me here - I am not sure exactly why. This village was rapidly being incorporated into Kenema Town proper. Divided by the road - here lived a blacksmith who made me several machetes. In this photo the Bondo devil (or spirit) can be seen, along with what appear like a number of very young girls dressed in typical Bondo attire. I can also recognize a number of leaders in the local Bondo including Mama Hokey, and the segburreh player named Ye Massa. This was taken in 1969.
