Rice, the staple of the local diet, along with a sauce of potato or casava leaves, and palm oil took all afternoon to prepare as the children or women gathered wood for the fire in the kitchen shed, as rice which had been stored was shelled, and a full rice meal was prepared. In addition all the children were expected to help out after about the age of 3 or 4. One of our students, Baindu Lansana (standing on the left) is in this photo.
